Why are animations of your products so important?

Improves understanding

Photo realistic 3D visualizations and animations help to provide insight into how the product would appear in real life. When created during the design phase, it makes it easier to the display the designs’ texture and other critical appearances of the product. When it comes to architectural buildings, it helps to show every floor, the landscape, the elevations and other critical areas of the structure before building it.

This is very instrumental in helping your potential investors understand the functionality and appearance of your product. This makes convincing them a lot easier than it would be if you only used a 2D drawing.

Improves functionality

Photo realistic visualizations and animations help you to identify all the flaws that might exist in your current design before making any parts. You can use the product animation to get feedback on the current design and apply the feedback you get to a re-design. This saves a lot of time and money because you can remedy the flaws before going to production.

Why Rendered or Animated Depictions of Products?

Our clients love 3D product renderings and animations as they’re generally cheaper than 3D printing parts. If you are unable to afford to 3D print or prototype your part or product idea then making an animation or 3D still image rendering might be the better option. With an animation and/or rendering you can attract investors to help you pay for the 3D printing, prototyping & manufacturing mass production. Product animations and visualization renders aim to help them understand how your new product will benefit consumers and the functionality and intended use of the product.

Even with a small budget you can still turn their idea into reality. Now with our latest virtual reality offerings, 3D renderings are the next best thing to holding a prototype of your product in your hands.

Animated Product Demo Videos

What are animated product videos?

As the sentence suggests it’s a demonstration of what you, your service, or consumer product has to offer in the form of a vibrant, colorful video that stimulates the mind.

It provides only enough information, to leave your customers wanting more. It also provides samples of your content without giving it all away for free.

These types of videos are also known as “Explainer Videos”, and do exactly that, they explain or showcase the benefits and functionality by providing a virtual tour of what it is you’re offering.

The use of vibrant color, depth and movement, and sometimes the inclusion of a storyline, gives the viewer an in-depth look at your product or service before buying.

It gets the viewer immersed in your concept and makes them feel a part of the ‘story’ if you have one. It also proves that the product can do what it says it does. Not to mention saving companies tons of time and money by not having to use reps and consultants.

Now, naturally, there are some rules here.

Apart from conceptualizing, researching, designing and animating your idea, you need to control how long your video will be to captivate your audience.

Make it too long and they’ll lose interest. Studies suggest 60 seconds is a happy medium, and no longer than 2 minutes or your audience gets bored.

Product Design VS Animation

Product Design

To truly understand what Product Design is, we need to delve deeper into all the components that encompass it.

In layman’s terms, PD is the action of taking an idea and turning it into a tangible consumer product or service.

The design will outline the benefits, function and capabilities of said goods or services.

However, as mentioned, there are various types of design or designers that encompass the ‘Product Design’ term role and process.

It includes Graphic or Visual Designers, Interaction or UX Designers and Motion or Animation Designers. So, it really is a quite complicated thing.

Also, don’t forget the extremely important role of the User Researchers, Data Analysts, Prototypers and Business Strategists who analyze, research, test, prototype and strategize the need and functionality of the product or service. This team of experts manages the entire process from conceptualization to completion, ensuring a perfect end result is delivered within a reasonable time frame.

Now you see that quite a lot goes into product design that I bet you did not think about.

Hence, it’s best you leave it to the Professionals.

Animation

Quite simply, Animation is the art of bringing a design, image, object or character to life!

These designs are manipulated in a skillful manner to appear as though they are moving or even alive.

It’s easy to see that animation cannot exist without product design, as one needs a medium to control in order to animate. Without the design, there is nothing to Animate. The 2 very simply go together.

Product Exploded View Animation

Now here is where we take things to the next level with exploded view animation, and it is exactly what it sounds like.

It’s making an animation super active and giving it multiple functions instead of a flowing singular image.

It offers the viewer capabilities of rotating items or products 360 degrees, changing color, opening and closing doors, and so on, or taking an item apart and putting it back together to view internal structures during the animation to show off its functionality.

It really is super cool to see, and just takes your animation to a new dimension.

You can know for sure it’ll place your business at a level above your competitors.

Product Animation Examples

This is where things get interesting because there really isn’t anything that cannot be animated and put to film. The possibilities are endless and are totally dependent on the breadth and scope of your imagination.

There are numerous animations to choose from depending on what your vision is.From how-to, why-to-buy, features and benefits, how-to-use or where-to-click instructional processes explained, whiteboarding for theoretical animations, to showcasing products like shoes, audio equipment, cars and homes to name a few.

Then there is the other side where services like a massage, car detailing, a cooking demo at a culinary school are advertised, or a viewing of the newest wedding venue is unveiled.

Now keep in mind that smartphones are also changing everything! So, videos must be altered to be mobile friendly for your consumer to watch-on-the-go.

This mobile capable advertising allows you to reach your consumer during any point of the day as they aren’t restricted to sitting behind a computer after their work day is completed. Your video is at their fingertips all the time!

Also, note that animation can take the form of E-learning as people like to use articulate storylines too.

Product Videos for Marketing

Quite simply companies have been using videos for years in the form of advertisements.

It all comes down to wanting exposure! Everyone knows that if people don’t know about you or your brand it means zero sales.

The latest statistics show that video marketing has grown in popularity by over 80% and will continue to grow at this rate for the next 4 years at least. The world today is believed to have moved to a video first consumer community.

Did you know that more than a staggering 500 million hours of videos are watched every day, and that 87% of companies use video as a means to market their businesses as it’s been proven to provide the best return on investment?

Video marketing is now the main means of advertising for businesses across the world and you should be getting in on the action too!

Additionally, creating awareness has never been easier with access to social media. It allows you to advertise your videos and instantly access a database of millions of potential consumers.

Use of product videos today has made it super easy for companies to create their vision, deploy it, and track consumer behavior.

You can see who viewed your content, how long viewers watched and even if they completed the entire video. Now that’s awesome!

How to Make 3D Product Animations (And Why You Should Use an Expert Instead of Doing It Yourself)

Numerous tools can be used to make your 3D animations such as Autodesk 3D Max, After Effects and Aurora 3D to mention a few.

It’s not a simple task and the very basic steps are as follows:

  1. Ensure your Model/ image/clip is ready
  2. (images are best when they have flat surfaces and are high resolution)
  3. Create a main composition with solid background
  4. Install your model
  5. Transform and fit your image/ model to the screen size
  6. Add light and shadows
  7. Change positions of light and image to add depth
  8. Drop your element effect or grid on the solid
  9. Add features one at a time
  10. Add and edit the environment
  11. Animate the model by using rotation, slow pins and movement- be careful not to duplicate in one roll.
  12. Render to complete.

Why Use a Professional?

We’ve never lived in an era where things change so much and so often than we do today.

If you don’t constantly upskill and stay current you will certainly fall behind with the latest trends and technology, placing you strides behind your competitors who employ professionals to handle their vision.

3D product animations are very complicated to design and develop. Unless you have in-house expertise, we don’t recommend doing it on your own.

Having said this, there are a few things to consider.

  1. What are your budget and time constraints?
  2. Do you have the tools to complete the task in house?
  3. Do you need to outsource?
  4. What value will it add. More sales or is it a nice-to-have?
  5. Do you have a template to work with?
  6. Do you have the equipment to provide superior sound quality?

Notably, it takes a variety of tools to develop and often companies require strong product owners to provide content.

Considering a consumer landscape that changes quickly, and millennial expectations that are challenging, not having the right tools and experience to do it inhouse won’t amaze your audience.

We don’t always think about these things, but when it comes to authoring tools, you can’t become complacent. You need to know which platforms to use and you must constantly upskill and evolve.

You’ll have to become part of a community of practice to be able to follow trend and pace of change.

This is a full-time job. Do you really have the time to commit?

As we’ve mentioned before, it’s best to stick to what you know and if you want something done properly, leave it to the pros.

After all, making countless mistakes and changes due to inexperience will certainly be costly, not to mention time-consuming. Whereas trusting Professionals to handle your business, is the smart thing to do.

Virtual reality for product renderings

Virtual Reality or “VR” is not a very new technology but due to recent technology advancements it is available and affordable to anyone!

For as little as $10, someone can simply turn their smartphone into a VR headset and view any 3D file in virtual reality.

How does Virtual Reality work?

Virtual reality headsets basically create 2 images of the same scene at a slightly different view angle for each. This tricks your eyes into thinking that what they are viewing is real.

Why is virtual reality important?

Over the years we’ve found that a lot of our clients find it difficult to visualize their design because they are not 3D designers like we are. Sometimes when we design something for a client, they receive the part and realize that they forgot to inform us about an important design aspect. We then need to change the design and 3D print another one. With VR, clients can view their design from any angle before we send it to 3D print. They can point out any concern they have before 3D printing or mold making and manufacturing. Obviously, this saves a lot of time and money for our clients because we avoid 3D printing parts with design errors.

Some examples of the virtual reality files for our product renderings are below. Add an affordable VR headset from Google Cardboard and a smartphone to explore them in immersive 3D.

There are heaps more on our sketchfab account you can browse through!

We also help our clients with crowdfunding campaigns to help them fund their projects. Imagine how engaged potential investors would be in your product if they can view it in 3D virtual reality!
